Free online football manager games: options you can play in your browser

A comparison of football manager games that run in the browser and cost nothing to play: how they work, how much time they take and who each one suits best.

If you grew up picking line-ups in Championship Manager or a classic offline manager, you know the urge to run a club again. The difference is that today you can do it without installing anything: several football managers run straight in the browser, for free, and put you up against real managers.

They are quite different from each other, though. Some ask for a few minutes a week, others want daily attention. Some use real clubs, others let you create your own. This post compares the best-known options so you can pick the one that fits your pace.

What to look at before choosing

Before the list, it helps to know what changes from one game to another:

  • Calendar pace: are matches played at a fixed time (the same for everyone) or do you advance whenever you want?
  • Who you play against: only the computer, or other people in the same league?
  • Real or created club: do you take over an existing team or build one from scratch?
  • What is paid: does paying only make the game look nicer, or does it also give you an edge on the pitch?
  • Mobile: does it work well in a mobile browser, or do you need an app?

Master Liga

Master Liga is our own game, so keep in mind we are talking about ourselves here. It was made for people who want the feel of the classic managers, but online.

  • Pace: one round per day, at a fixed league time. The match is simulated even if you are offline. If you log in at kick-off, you can follow it live, with narrated highlights and stats.
  • Who you play against: 14-club leagues that mix teams run by other people and computer-controlled teams, with promotion and relegation between divisions. After the leagues come the international cups.
  • Club: you choose the name, short name, crest, colours and stadium, and take over a club's spot in a division of the country you pick, along with its squad.
  • Depth: line-ups, scheduled substitutions, fatigue that carries over from one match to the next, training by area of the pitch, a youth academy, a market with free agents and players listed by other clubs, ticket prices per stand and sponsorship.
  • What is paid: the game is free. Premium is optional and unlocks customisation, without touching attributes or match results.
  • Mobile: runs in the browser, in Portuguese, English and Spanish.

Who it is for: people with a few minutes a day who enjoy watching their season unfold alongside other managers'. If you used to play Brasfoot, see what is similar and what changes.

Hattrick

One of the oldest online managers, with one of the largest communities. You get a fictional club and play against other people in leagues organised by country.

  • Pace: slow. League matches are weekly, so a season takes months.
  • Strength: a big community, long-running leagues and a game designed to be played for years.
  • Who it is for: people who want a long-term project and do not mind waiting to see results.

Trophy Manager

Another browser manager with clubs created by the players and leagues between people.

  • Pace: several matches a week, much faster than Hattrick.
  • Strength: lots of numbers to dig into about players and training.
  • Who it is for: spreadsheet lovers who like to fine-tune every detail of the squad.

Online Soccer Manager (OSM)

Very popular on mobile, and it also has a browser version.

  • Pace: fast, with short seasons.
  • Strength: real clubs and leagues, with names you know.
  • Who it is for: people who want to manage a real team in short sessions, mostly on their phone.

What about the downloadable classics?

Brasfoot and Elifoot still have fans, but they are games you install on your computer and play against the computer, at your own pace. Football Manager is the most complete of all, but it is paid and takes many hours per season.

If what you want is exactly to advance rounds whenever you like, on your own, they are still great choices. If you want real rivals and to play from anywhere without installing anything, an online manager makes more sense.

Quick summary

Game Pace Rivals Club
Master Liga 1 round per day People and computer Created by you
Hattrick Weekly People Fictional
Trophy Manager Several matches a week People Fictional
OSM Fast People and computer Real
